Election2013 : No To Vote Buying !

$

0

BUMOTO NG TAMA AT MAY PANININDIGAN , NO TO VOTE BUYING .

#SocialMediaCapital

On June 30, the Philippines joins the world, for the very first time, in marking Social Media Day, with a big event planned right at the heart of Makati City.

Filipino Twitterati, bloggers, advocates, practitioners from media, business, government are expected to grace that day’s celebration of creativity, community and conversation that has pushed individuals, companies and organizations, and the nation many steps forward and ahead of the rest of the world.

The event is being organized by the community of netizens behind TweetUp Manila and the first Twestival Manila, and whose work and passions have brought them together both online and offline.

There is much reason to celebrate social media in the Philippines: its creation of new careers and new opportunities, the awesome efforts to use new tools for helping during and after disasters such as Ondoy and Sendong, the new space for media, politics and expression, citizen journalism and cutting-edge, content-rich multimedia practice, and industry going digital to reach and affect more people whether thru marketing, PR or advertising.

The Congress’‘Third House': What Actually Happened to the Cybercrime Bill

$

Netizens are angry about the enactment of RA 10175, more popularly known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (read full text here) due to several provisions including the controversial online libel provision (Sec 4c par (4)). Aside from the danger it poses to free speech liberally enjoyed by the online population, the said provision compounds the problem of the already-obsolete libel law. Furthermore, Rep. Tinio of ACT Partylist and Rep. Palatino of the Kabataan Partylist, known critics of the said law, describes the more serious consequences of this law such as the superpower of law enforcement agencies, and issues on due process. Much more were revealed during the round-table discussion held at the UP College of Hall, Sept 19 (for the recordings of the meeting, please click here).

A few days ago, journalist-blogger Raissa Robles reveals that it was actually the self-proclaimed victim of cyberbullying, Tito Sotto who introduced the online libel provision on the final version of the bill. She further notes that this particular provision does not appear on the House and Senate versions of the bill. It was also revealed during the round-table discussion that several other provisions such as the Double Penalty provisions (Sec 6, 7) were not in either versions.  Rep. Tinio added that on the House version, there used to be an exclusionary and destruction provisions which requires ISPs to keep data for only 90 days. In other words, somewhere between the Third Reading of the bills and the signing of it into law, there is a dagdag-bawas that happened.

It turned out that somewhere brings us to the so-called “Third House”: the Bicameral Conference Committee. (Flow chart of Legislative Process is found here.)

According to the Senate website, the Bicameral Conference Committee’s main role is to reconcile the House and Senate versions of a particular bill before a final copy is transmitted to the President. In other words, it is during the Bicameral Conference Committee where a final bill of the copy is made. In actuality however, what happened for the Cybercrime Bills is that the questioned provisions were inserted during the Bicameral Conference Committee– away from the scrutiny of the entire membership of the Congress and to the public. Even Tinio and Palatino attest to the practice where legislators will expedite legislative process since the “Third House” will deal on a contested provision anyway.

This made me curious because this poses another, and a much bigger problem.

If this is what is happening, then the Bicameral Conference Committee wields a great power beyond our scrutiny. Let’s have a quick look on this: How many of us know which people were there in the Bicam Committee? Answer: We don’t know. The public does not know, in general, who these people were: these people who have the power to ignore the provisions proposed by the legislators– which, by the way, are a product of hours of debate, interpellations and meetings. These people are away from scrutiny, and therefore away from public accountability. These people who only meets in a hotel somewhere in the city, where the general public does not know what is happening. Take for example the Cybercrime bill: Was there any debate when Tito Sotto inserted the online libel provision? Who approved the double-plus penal provision (Sec 6)? We do not know the answer.

We can see a bigger problem here right now and this is issue needs to be brought up because it does not only apply on the Cybercrime law. Who knows? Maybe other approved laws have undergone such irregular proceedings. The Bicameral Conference Committee wields a very horrific power which, in theory, they are not entitled to. There is a huge difference between reconciling versions of the bill and stealthily adding or killing provisions on the bill. The latter is the sole job of the House and Senate. I only hope that the Legislature and the Government be more transparent when it comes to passing a legislative measure. I also hope that the Legislature will be transparent enough to reveal to the public what actually happens on any Bicameral Conference Committee hearings.

For now, let’s call on for Congress to reveal who were the members of the Bicameral Conference Committee for Cybercrime Law and let’s ask for explanations on the contested provisions.

Malala: A girl of courage #MalalaDay #IamMalala

Malala Yousufzai, a 14 year-old advocate of her right to education. Malala told in one of CNN’s interview:

“I have the right of education, I have the right to play. I have the right to sing. I have the right to talk. I have the right to go to market. I have the right to speak up.”

Being an advocate of education becomes Malala’s passion, her love to literature and learning urged her to fight and stand up for the right that the Taliban gradually is robbing from her and to the other girls of Pakistan.

Malala has been writing and fighting for her advocacy since January of 2009 when the Taliban issued a formal edict banning all girls from schools. She wrote a blog in BBC under a pseudonym , I would like to describe that blog as courageous as a blog could be. She continued to speak out regardless of what her age is and in fact was the first recipient of her country’s National Peace Award last year.

Shot in the head

October 9,2012 I stumbled upon this news from the international community “14 year-old Pakistani girl was shot in head” it really caught my attention since we have the same age and I didn’t really think that the Taliban could’ve done that to a girl. As I scrolled down the news it said:

“Now 14, she (Malala) was coming home from school in a van with other schoolchildren when Taliban assassins stopped the vehicle, climbed on and demanded that the children identify her. Terrified, the children did and the men fired, also wounding two other girls” , according to CNN.

A statement from Taliban came out and it said:

“We do not tolerate people like Malala speaking against us,” a Taliban spokesman later said, as Malala, in a Pakistani hospital, breathed with the help of a ventilator.

Malala was sent to Great Britain and is being cared for by international doctors and now in the stage of recuperation.

A role model

Malala really is a role model for today’s youth. To stand up for what is right should what the youth of this generation do. Standing for your right is all about yourself and being brave is all you need to have a nation wherein peace and order proliferate.

November 10 2012 has been declared as Malala Day. We are one with Malala’s advocacy —- Education for all, regardless of what your gender is. Being literate is your right and no one should stop you from learning.

Malala might be silenced now and lying in the hospital but if we all unite and take an action ,her dream will come into reality

I’m Jann Ericko N. Medina , just turned 15 year-old today (November 10 , 2012 ) an advocate, blogger and most of all a concerned youth of this generation , I’m one with Malala’s advocacy that education should be given to all.

Helping Malala can come in simple ways . Just let your voice be heard in support of Malala. Here is how you can help:

1. Sign the petition to call on Pakistan to agree to a plan to deliver education to all its children: http://educationenvoy.org/
2. Spread the word. Inform your audience of the #IamMalala campaign and invite them to sign the petition.
3. Spend November 10th in solidarity for Malala Day. Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown – the UN Special Envoy for Global Education – and his wife Sarah will deliver this petition to the Pakistani president on this day.

Social media to drive social change #fwdPh #SMday

Originally posted at Social media as tool for advocacy

Whether we like it or not, the communications world is rapidly changing. Emerging media is “the evolution of utilizing technology to share information in new and innovative ways. “ Not so long ago, blogging was a popular medium to share my story on how I lost my beloved son. The platform served me well because I was able to reach out to readers with similar losses. Twitter came but I used it mainly for broadcasting my daily grind . Then facebook, instagram, pinterest and other social networks soon sprouted.

A citizen

Using the monicker “momblogger” was a matter of convenience. How would I have known that personal branding would define my online reputation and the focus of my advocacy?

As a mom blogger, I cannot isolate myself from the larger society. Moms may react differently on specific issues but we all have a common concern : our children’s futures unite us.

blogwatch talk

My concern is to nurture both my family and community. Dealing with politics is incidental. Sometimes when you want change, the best way to attain is to through political means. But politics is not an end in itself but merely a means to an end. I used social media to drive an advocacy, to push for social change.

Let’s move #fwdPH

Nothing makes my online life more relevant than using social media for social good and maximizing personal and collective social media capital for social change. The #SocialMediaWeekend theme “Let’s move #fwdPH” is a “call to spread positive vibes across the country and make social media a tool for social good, more opportunities and doing great things for communities and country.”

Lessons learned

epalwatch talk

While the initial purpose of Blog Watch was meant to empower bloggers, emerging media calls for a broader term such as citizen advocates. In the past, Blog Watch was often called a citizen journalism site. The accurate term is citizen media. Wikipedia refers to citizen media as forms of content produced by private citizens who are otherwise not professional journalists. It is the appropriate word because we are basically active citizens that use new technology to achieve social change.

These are the steps we, in Blog Watch took used social media to advocate for social change.

1. Message matters

Sometimes it can make your message more powerful if you can connect it to why the issue is important to you. One example is breast feeding. It is important to me because our children need the best nutrition early on. Around 16,000 babies die each year because they were not breastfed. I use the hashtag #BreastFeedingPH to push the message that “Breastfeeding is still best for babies” and to make sure that no milk formula company undermines breastfeeding.

2 . Organizing a community

Citizen advocates don’t want to just take action – they want to feel part of a community that create change. Not everyone is born to be an organizer or want to participate in all activities in a community. It is important to maintain a core group to set a single, focused goal to provide direction, motivation and operational guidance. As a community , there is a need to write a disclosure for transparency. It is just as important to establish guidelines or ethics so the community is consistent and maintains its credibility.

3. Online + Offline

Online advocacy should integrate with offline. They go together. Meetings with stakeholders and legislators are needed to push the agenda of an advocacy. In our #epalwatch project, a meeting with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) paved the way for the guidelines on common areas for posters and the size of banners and tarpulins.

4. Take social a spin

No man is an island applies as well to a community. One needs to collaborate and amplify personal connections. Don’t just broadcast. Take action. Provide content to match the media like twitter, facebook , instagram, tumblr, The positive gains of #epalwatch was realized because of the collaboration with No More Epal Facebook group , Juana Change and Carlos Celdran.

Social Media to Drive Social Change

Social media tools are a central component of almost any movement and it is bound to change over the years. The most-used social media advocacy tools include blogs, portals, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram email, and texts. While hundreds of social media applications exist, one should start spending time and resources where your supporters are most likely to be. One then needs to integrate efforts for better overall results.

dragonfly

There are just four skills to remember . The Dragonfly Effect best explains as follows:

1. Focus – hatch a goal that will make an impact

2. Grab Attention – stick out in an overcrowded, over-messaged, noisy world

3. Engage – make people connect with your goal

4. Take Action – empower others, enable them, and cultivate a movement

Using social media as a tool for advocacy works because of “low (or no) hard costs for set-up; potentially wide reach; quick/instantaneous sharing of messages; new opportunities to listen, engage, and monitor your progress.”

Social media users have done it before and we must continue to do it over and over again not just because we are capable of it, but because we must. Let’s go forward, Philippines. Just do it.

How to attain social media engagement

$

Written by Ma. Rachel Yapchiongco, as oriinally posted at the Philippine Online Chronicles

Social media has become a potentially powerful tool to boost business. Big and small companies all over the world are realizing that social media has the ability to contribute to success and growth of their businesses if used and implemented wisely. Social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Instagram, and Pinterest are valuable sources of consumer information.

Social media offers a myriad of advantages. Here are some benefits of social media for business:

  • Social media networks have become useful channels for businesses to share their voice and content. Proper exposure on social media can help companies access new customers, get the attention of existing clients and increase brand recognition.
  • Companies that establish strong connections through social media are likely to enjoy loyalty from their customers.
  • Businesses can use social media networks to build a following which can serve as links to new, recent and old customers. The content that you share can spark market interest, encourage site visit or start an interaction.
  • Interacting regularly with customers give companies a positive edge. The more you engage in social media, the higher the chances of increasing social media followers. Large number of followers can be used as a positive indication of trust and credibility in your business or brand.
  • The more quality content you put out on social media, the higher inbound traffic you get.
  • Social media can help companies save on marketing costs.
  • Strong social media presence can boost customer relationship.
  • Companies can use social media to gain valuable insights about their customers.

Social media can become a bridge to success if utilized effectively. Here are several ways to increase social media engagement for business:

Promote proactive social media interaction. A company doesn’t have to lay and wait for clients to come to them. Use social media to interact with anyone who mentions your products or services. Initiate meaningful dialogues with current and potential customers. Consumers who receive quick and positive responses on social media are likely to try your brand again or recommend it to other people.

According to Social Media Today, proactive dialogues can help a company achieve the following:

  • Reach a wider audience.
  • Attract new clients.
  • Develop affinity for your brand.
  • Inspire mutual sociability.

An important aspect of promoting proactive social media interaction is spending time listening and observing consumers’ conversations. Learn to pinpoint opportunities to join conversations and engage in meaningful exchange of ideas and opinions.

Get involved in community discussions or forums linked with your company, brand, products, services, competitors, and other related topics. The company can get valuable information from such sources.

Dedicate time for social media engagement on a regular basis. Come up with a daily target goal and work on that.

Employ social media monitoring tools. Companies can use free social media tools to make “listening” easier and enable the business to take part in proactive discussions. Here are some examples of free social media tools that businesses can consider:

  • Google Alerts – It is an easy way to find out if a website is posting things about your company or brand.
  • Hootsuite– It has the ability to put together and manage social media accounts. For instance, search columns can be used to perform real time scans on Twitter to monitor discussions and give immediate feedbacks or replies.
  • TweetDeck– Businesses can use this to schedule tweets, customize searches and keep the company up-to-date with the latest happenings. It can monitor hashtags, specific topics, events, etc.
  • Social Mention – It collects and sums data from different social media platforms. It provides basic analytics and determine ratio of positive feedbacks over negative mentions.
  • Icerocket – It manages blog searches and other social platform activities.
  • Topsy – It is comparable to Icerocket and Social Mention.
  • Addictomatic – It can help monitor brand reputation by keeping track of recent blog posts, news, images, or videos based on specific keywords.

Think of related searches when using social media tools to get information about your business or brand name. The following may be applied when performing automated alerts for social media tools such as Google Alerts, TweetDeck, Hootsuite, and Topsy.

  • When searching information for your brand name, it is recommended that you add some variations of your company name or brand. Include abbreviations of your company name.
  • Include slogans, tag lines, catchphrases, and key messages related to your company or brand.
  • Keep in mind that some people may mistype your name or brand. Add different spellings of your company name or brand.
  • Add key words that may be linked to your company’s line of business or industry.

Include images and graphics to your content. Increase social media engagement by using visuals. Relevant infographics can stimulate interest and increase interaction rate. Graphics and photos can help captivate the audience and encourage them to share content on social medial platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Photos are considered as the most engaging type of content on Facebook that generates high rate of interaction. Adding a photo URL to a tweet can also help generate more retweets.

Host fun and exciting games, contests and giveaways. People in general like the idea of getting freebies and winning prizes. Giving away something can spark the interest of the audience. The company or organization can ask followers to fill-out an entry form, like your page, share a post about your company or brand, post something about your brand or latest product, invite others to follow your account, post a photo of your product, or create a video about your brand for a chance to win various prizes.

Build your audience as you would in real life. Followers are looking for real people behind the company name or brand. Avoid overwhelming your audience with too much information about your business. Keep in mind that social media is about the people. Don’t focus too much on your company and reach out to your followers. Help others by providing useful information and inforgraphics. For instance, a travel company can share posts about travel advisories, travel tips, packing suggestions, interesting places to visit during the season, etc.

Senator Grace Poe “leads the survey with 26 percent of the respondents choosing her as the successor of President Benigno Aquino III. The second place is shared by three probable presidential candidates: administration bet Manuel “Mar” Roxas II (20 percent), Vice President Jejomar Binay (19 percent) and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte (16 percent).”

Here are a few reactions from twitter:

Now what did the candidates think?

Senator Poe says ” This is a reminder to focus on performance & genuine service. ”

On the other hand, VP Binay says “We have stable core of supporters”.

A Pulse Asia executive says “It’s still anybody’s ball game for the three leading presidential aspirants “.

The dancing Playgirls, the alleged birthday gift of MMDA Chair Tolentino to Laguna Rep. Agarao

Twitter reactions over the dancing girls at a birthday party range from “disgusting” to “#daangMalaswa”. Though Chair Tolentino denied the birthday gift, he failed to correct the EMCEE who kept announcing for the “nth time that these girls were courtesy of MMDA Tolentino”.

Watch the video:

Antonio Contreras in his facebook post, condemned the event:

That a major political party used scantily clad women dancing on stage as part of their oath taking speaks a lot of the baseness of our traditional politics. This was patently an assault on the dignity of women, where women’s bodies are now objectified and turned into a campaign paraphernalia. This has to be condemned. The Liberal Party, particularly its Laguna Chapter, should be held accountable.

That is the big question from Dr. Raquel Fortun (@doc4dead on twitter). Who would care about the Liberal Panty #TuwadnaDaan scandal if it weren’t for the photos and videos? Who would have known about the gravity? Obvious that these two ladies and their ilk are driven by a political agenda, and are as guilty as Agarao and Tolentino of misogyny. They could have driven their point by strong words, but no. Those Playgirls videos and memes should be shared so that other’s eyes can be “opened.” Never mind that they are actually exploiting the victims to push their agenda.

This is what I have to say. Showing the videos and photos of the #lewdparty reveal the extent of the moral depravity of people who want to continue to be in power . Now, false argument is being used by the real exploiters to confuse the public but people are discerning. They know who the real exploiters are. Inday E. Varona replied to my tweet:

The tweet of Ruffy Biazon did not sit well with Dean Bocobo (@sagadasun) and the latter argued about the importance of showing the videos and photos to “oppose and expose exploiters of my sisters, mothers and daughters!” Ruffy Biazon clarifies that “I reject exploitation of women & advocate gender sensitivity.I don’t only talk about it, I take action with projects/activities.”

Netizens’ reaction on Leni Robredo’s decision to run as VP under the LP

Netizens’ reaction are mixed. She is a breath of fresh air to the presidential bid of Mar Roxas. Vernee Jay Folgo says “Leni Robredo, her simplicity and her humble admission that she is inexperienced captures the true image of her sincerity.” Some are not comfortable with her decision. She is after all, the second choice of Mar’s choice as VP. Another says that Leni Robredo gave in to the desperation of President Aquino and like “Grace Poe, it’s too early for her to seek higher gov’t post, imo.”

Herbie Docena says it is just fair to ask “Where was Ms Robredo in our struggle against the pork barrel system? Why was she not with us there on the streets or in the halls of Congress fighting for accountability for the crime that was the DAP? Where did she stand in our fight against labor contractualization and why was she not with us in the fight against the MRT fare hikes? Why has she not spoken out against the killing of our lumad sisters and brothers? Why, indeed, has she chosen to remain with a party that has consistently promoted elite interests over the interests of the working people?

Taking the bus home and living a much simpler life is admirable but is that automatically proof that one stands with the common people? ”

I have no doubt that Ms Robredo is a decent person–certainly much more so than her slimy rivals. But since she's being…

Why is the Official Gazette publishing Liberal Party propaganda?

Dan Peckley asked ” Should such an article be on an official government publication? ” #Delicadeza

Why is the OFFICIAL GAZETTE publishing Liberal Party propaganda? asks @sagadasun

Photos of the endorsement of Mar Roxas and Leni Robredo are also found at the Facebook page of the President.

facebook page with LO

“Whose cause and at what cost to the sovereign people? Official page of the president managed by govt office using government funds but with endorsement of future candidates? Why should taxpayers shoulder that? What is the legal basis? While these materials contain info on party activity, they focus solely on president. Facebook page has photos of candidates endorsed by president – promotional materials which taxpayers should not be paying for.” asks @Chilimedley

Manuel L. Quezon III (Manolo)  replied on twitter that “convention and party speeches of all presidents from Quezon onwards are in official gazette as indivisible”

I replied that it is ” using public position and public funds to advance partisan interests.” to which Manolo says it is democracy.

“No, that’s not democracy. That’s abuse of power. Using the people’s money to promote your candidate is NOT democracy. Pls.”, asserts @chilimedley

That was our Twitter discussion yesterday. Today, the discussion resumes and Manolo provides the link of  https://archive.org/details/govph  and to check  the Revised Admin Code for the content since the 1940 expansion. For content, “The Official Gazette follows the precedents established since 1935, both in the Official Gazette itself, and in the Messages of the President series under the Quezon, Roxas, and Quirino administrations” (See content guidelines). Examples of what is permissible and impermissible are found here.

“There’s a VAST difference between the president speaking at a party event and the president endorsing party candidates. ”

A long winding discussion on editorial policies belabor my point. This is our Tax money. Liberal Party CANDIDATES are not the President.

Netizens reaction on the ‘perpetual disqualification’ of Junjun Binay

Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales said ” there was strong evidence presented during the administrative adjudication of the complaint that proved Junjun Binay was guilty of grave misconduct and serious dishonesty over the alleged overpriced construction of the P2.28-billion structure, also referred as the Makati parking building.”

Morales said Binay failed to ensure that the contracts the city government was entering into were fair, reasonable and advantageous to the government. Here is the full statement.

Joey Salgado, spokesperson for the Binay family, said the Ombudsman’s order was meant to stop the younger Binay from running in 2016.

People who say they will vote for Miriam but not Bongbong are BLIND to the real danger- Dean Bocobo (@sagadasun on twitter)

With two out of the ten most corrupt leaders in the world, Philippines owns a shameful record with Ferdinand Marcos at No.2 embezzling 5 to 10 Billion US dollars, and Joseph Estrada at No.10 embezzling $78-80 Million US dollars. But note this well folks, MIRIAM DEFENSOR SANTIAGO sides with BOTH these corrupt leaders and is now gunning for the Philippine Presidency. To do what, I wonder? Perhaps to exceed them in venality and corruption?

apec lumad performance

The cultural show presented before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Welcome dinner was so beautiful and touching. I could not help but feel a twinge of sadness as Apl.de.Ap and the The Voice Kids PH finalist Reynan Dal-Anay (dressed as a Lumad) sang . Michelle, my friend, says it so well “I hope the irony is not lost on Noynoy Aquino. That while he and his men try their best to hide the Lumad from the APEC delegates, here is one, performing right before them.

apec lumad performance

Or is this the only kind of Lumad that he wants to see and to show the world? Rehearsed, controlled, predictable, with prior approval?

Know that beyond the rows and rows of policemen, container vans, steel railings and tarpaulins, the Lumad remain. They exist, no matter how hard you deny it. No matter where you look. The Lumad are within you. Their blood is in your hands. Unlike this performer who is at your beck and call, the Lumad stand their ground and fight on. No rehearsals. No performances.”

3. Arnel Pineda
4. Cecile Licad , playing the Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude on the piano
